Who We Are

Our Pastor ...

Our pastor is different.  He is a blend of good humor mixed with serious scholarship and a generous

sprinkling of caring. He has been known to set aside countless hours during the week to listen and

care for individuals and families in crisis.  This devotion may sound normal for a pastor – but Steve

is exceptional.  He is bi-vocational, with considerable responsibility as the director of sales and

marketing for a regional window manufacturer. Community Church, however, comes first in his

professional life.

His sermons are never boring, and he has a reputation for doing unexpected things to illustrate a point

or keep our attention. He strives, he tells us, to keep the Big Idea of the Day not only relevant to the

world around us, but to be a means of applying the timeless word of God to our lives.

His teaching method has allowed many of us to grow in our faith.  Many of us have applied the lessons of Extreme Bible Study on Wednesday evenings or Sunday mornings to our larger lives later in the week. He is not afraid to address difficult questions and, if he does not know the answer, will spend the necessary time in research to respond.

He is married to Louise, a teacher in her own right, and they have six children in their blended family and share five grandchildren.

Steve’s openness to new ideas while standing firm on principles is partially rooted in his education. Degrees from Southeastern Christian College, Georgetown College, and Houston Graduate School of Theology have helped shape the mind of our pastor. He loves to read, and is always adding more knowledge and information to his mind. We are often the recipients of the fresh perspective that comes only to open minds, based on the rich principles of God’s word.

Our Church ...

Community UCC was first organized in 1923 as a Sunday School by a group
known as The Pfafftown Community Building Association. They recognized a
need for "a community building to be used for all purposes, pertaining to the
spiritual and moral welfare of the community."  The building was completed
April 1, 1924. The building was to be non-denominational and used for a
community church, a community Sunday School, or any other organization
that was for the moral, spiritual and intellectual betterment of the community.
The first meeting was held Easter Sunday, April 6, 1924.

Around 1932, a classroom and a furnace room were added to the sanctuary; money was raised through church suppers, lawn parties and donations.  Through the 1930's, there was no denominational affiliation, and the pastors who conducted the services were from varied backgrounds.

On December 1, 1940, the church was re-organized through the Southern Christian Convention of the Congregational Christian Church and became "The Pfafftown Congregational Christian Church".  There were twenty-eight charter members.  In 1957, the United Church of Christ was formed, and we became Community UCC.

The Fellowship Hall and more classrooms were built in 1957. In 2001 the Fellowship Hall was enlarged, a new kitchen and classrooms added, and completed in 2002. A lovely gazebo for The Gardens was donated to the church in 2001.
