Children’s Sunday School ...

Currently there are two classes for children at Community Church.

One class is structured for the needs of special needs children. Material and
methods are designed to speak to young persons in this learning category.
This class is lead by certified teachers, who spend an abundant amount of
time on preparation for the class.
The other class is led by laypersons of
the church, and uses material approved for that age level. Students are
challenged to understand and apply the material.

Classes meet from 10:00 to 10:45 am, except during the summer.

Adult Sunday School ...

The Adult Sunday School class has studied several subject-oriented programs, "The Mind of Christ" and "Experiencing God".   They then “went back to the beginning” with a study of Genesis. The class has embraced this whole heartedly. After finishing Genesis, the class was excited about continuing their studies in the Bible. They moved through Exodus and are currently studying in Leviticus. Next, they will start a study in Numbers, as their goal is to go completely through the Bible.

Extreme Bible Study ...

This group meets on Wednesday evenings during the Fall, Winter, and
Spring at 6:30PM. It is the fastest 90 minutes in America. Lively discussion,
heartfelt concerns, and life-altering teaching are part of the mix. This group
alternates between disciplined book-based studies that bring the practical
application of Scripture to everyday situations, and an in-depth study of
various books of the Bible.

A parallel group meets on Sunday morning for individuals who cannot make
Wednesday evening. Shorter in time spent, about 45 minutes, this group of
working professionals considers the same material with application in the
world of business.  Come join us.

Confirmation Class ...

CUCC offers confirmation to 8th/9th graders and others, as appropriate.  The core curriculum is UCC material, covering a history of Christianity, the UCC as well as Community United Church of Christ.   Confirmands review Biblical history, Christian beliefs and application for our current day.  The course is led by the pastor, deacons and selected lay people.  During the 3-4 months of classes, students are encouraged to develop their own personal statement of faith and become members of the larger church community at completion.

New Member Orientation Class ...

We offer several options for new members and people attending who want to learn more about us and the United Church of Christ.  Pastor Steve teaches a New Member Orientation class that encourages people to take a closer spiritual walk through the study of scripture, deepen their prayer life, and commit to allowing Christ into all aspects of their life, both inside and outside the church.  The class includes group discussions and recommended books and videos.  Pastor Steve also covers the history of the United Church of Christ.

Following this class, everyone is encouraged to attend one of the several Sunday School classes we offer.

The Seasoned Singles

The Seasoned Singles is a newly formed Christian based ministry that provides fellowship, fun, and a sense of belonging to singles, age 50 and up, not only in our church family but in the greater community through social activities and giving back to the community by volunteering as a group.

The group will meet once a month for such fun things as dinner and a movie, attending a play, going to a gospel singing, having a picnic on the Blue Ridge Parkway, taking a trip to Seagrove Pottery, touring a vineyard, or going to a local ball game.

Plans are to have a guest speaker from a non-profit organization one month to inform us of the volunteer activities available to a group.

The Seasoned Singles are also planning to lend a helping hand with the rebirth of “Critter Day” at CUCC.   (This is the blessing of the animals.)

The Seasoned Singles will have a pizza party in the church fellowship hall on Thursday,
August 26, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. All singles, 50 and up, are welcome to attend.

The Gardens ...

The Gardens at Community Church are nestled among large oak
and dogwood trees.  They begin with a winding brick walk to a lovely
Victorian-style gazebo. A granite bench and a wooden bench provide
an opportunity to “set a spell” and enjoy the tranquility.  It is a great
place to celebrate or meditate in the midst of God’s presence.   In
2008, we hosted a summer “Music in the Gardens” program.

With water and electricity available at the gazebo, the Gardens are
available to rent for weddings, showers, reunions and other celebrations.
Contact the church for details.
